Hand-Sculpted Pool Waterfalls — Custom Faux Rock Features
Every waterfall we build is a monolithic sculpted environment — hand-shaped from a structural foam core, wrapped in a 12,000psi fiber-reinforced shell, and finished with decorative mortar that mimics natural stone down to the grain. No prefab panels. No molds. Built, not placed.
Not a Kit. Not a Panel. A One-of-One Sculpture.
Most "custom" waterfall builders work from a catalog of prefabricated GFRC panels or fiberglass shells. They bolt pieces together, add mortar to hide the seams, and call it custom. That is not what we do.
At Boulder Legacies, every waterfall is sculpted on-site by hand. Lucas Speakman and the team carve the form from structural foam, apply a 12,000psi fiber-reinforced cementitious shell over basalt rebar (not steel — basalt eliminates rust expansion entirely), then hand-sculpt decorative Type S mortar with 0.5 to 5 inches of thickness variation to replicate the organic irregularity of natural stone.
The result is a monolithic, seamless structure with no joints, no panel lines, and no repeating patterns. It is concrete treated like sculpture — and it will outlast the pool it sits beside.
Pool, Landscape & Multi-Tier Configurations
Each installation is designed around your property, your pool geometry, and your vision. These are the three primary categories we work within.
Pool Waterfalls
Integrated directly into your pool shell or coping, these waterfalls deliver cascading water from sculpted rock formations that appear to emerge naturally from the surrounding hardscape. Sizes range from a subtle 4-foot cascade to a commanding 15-foot fall.

Landscape Waterfalls
Standalone water features for gardens, entry courtyards, and commercial properties. These freestanding sculptures incorporate recirculating pumps and basins, with stream and cascade elements that can extend 20 feet or more across a property.

Multi-Tier Waterfalls
Architecturally complex installations with two, three, or more cascading tiers. These are our most dramatic builds — combining elevation changes, catch basins at each level, and integrated lighting to create an environment that commands attention day and night.

What Holds It Together
Every Boulder Legacies waterfall is an engineered structure — not decorative veneer over cinder block. The construction method produces a monolithic form that resists cracking, settling, and water infiltration for decades.
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Core | Sculpted structural foam — lightweight, custom-carved to exact contour |
| Shell | 12,000psi fiber-reinforced cementitious shell |
| Reinforcement | Basalt rebar (no steel — zero rust expansion risk) |
| Finish | Decorative Type S mortar, 0.5–5 inch thickness variation |
| Waterproofing | Applied at all water-contact zones |
| Densification | Applied at waterlines for long-term surface integrity |
| Sealing | Full seal for UV and weather protection |
Sculpted Concrete vs. GFRC Panels vs. Prefab Kits
Understanding the difference between construction methods is critical before investing in a pool waterfall. Most builders use one of two shortcuts: pre-cast GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) panels or prefabricated fiberglass kits. Both have visible limitations.
| Feature | Boulder Legacies | GFRC Panels | Prefab Kits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | Monolithic, hand-sculpted | Bolted panel sections | Single fiberglass mold |
| Seams | None | Visible joints | Mold lines |
| Customization | Unlimited — sculpted to site | Limited to panel catalog | Fixed shapes only |
| Shell Strength | 12,000psi | 4,000–6,000psi typical | N/A (fiberglass) |
| Longevity | Decades — monolithic | Joint degradation risk | UV fading, cracking |
| Appearance | Indistinguishable from natural rock | Repeating textures | Plastic-like finish |
What Our Clients Say
Waterfall FAQ
Answers to the questions we hear most from prospective clients considering a custom waterfall installation.
Our waterfall projects typically range from $15,000 to $75,000 or more depending on size, complexity, and integration with other features (grottos, slides, fire elements). Every build begins with a $2,000 Design Investment that covers site consultation, measurements, and a 1:12 scale physical clay maquette — this amount is applied directly to your project cost. We provide a detailed quote after you approve the maquette.
The design phase takes 7–10 days (maquette creation and client review). Construction typically runs 2–6 weeks depending on the scale and complexity of the installation. A standard pool waterfall with no grotto or slide integration is usually complete in 2–3 weeks. Multi-tier or grotto-integrated builds require 4–6 weeks. We provide a detailed timeline after maquette approval.
Absolutely. Retrofitting a waterfall onto an existing pool is one of our most common project types. The sculpted structure is built adjacent to or over the pool edge, with plumbing tied into your existing pump system or a dedicated recirculation pump. We evaluate your pool shell, decking, and equipment pad during the site consultation to confirm feasibility and determine the optimal integration approach.
We use a foam core wrapped in a 12,000psi fiber-reinforced cementitious shell with basalt rebar reinforcement. The finish is decorative Type S mortar sculpted to replicate natural stone texture. This method produces a structure that is lighter than stacked natural rock (reducing foundation load), stronger than GFRC panels, completely seamless (no joints to fail), and fully customizable to any shape. Real rock stacks are heavy, shift over time, develop gaps where mortar fails, and cannot achieve the complex overhangs and cave-like formations that sculpted concrete can.
Minimal. The sealed, densified surface resists algae growth and mineral staining. Annual maintenance includes a pressure wash (low setting) and inspection of the sealant. Re-sealing is recommended every 3–5 years depending on climate and sun exposure. The basalt rebar and monolithic shell eliminate the cracking and joint separation that plague panel-based and stacked-rock waterfalls. Most of our installations from over a decade ago still look as they did on completion day.
